Barbara Austin was a much valued member of our committee, having been with the festival for over ten years. Her final role with the festival was Chairperson, and she led us through the uncertainty of lockdowns, with the cancelled 20th birthday festival of 2020, and the epic 8-day covid safe event of 2021. Barbara passed away in 2023 leaving us saddened and wanting to do something to honour her memory. The Barbara Austin Community Spirit award was born.
The criteria for the award is based on the values that we felt embodied Barb, we’re looking for the quiet achiever, the person that does a lot for their community without the need for accolades. Someone welcoming of all newcomers, inspiring, willing to pitch in and help, advocating for those less fortunate than themselves, passionate, enthusiastic and kind.
If you would like to nominate someone for this award, please complete the entry form. Entries close on Sunday, March 2nd 2025 with the winner presented their award at the Celebrate Mooroolbark Festival, Sunday March 16th, 2025.
2024 Recipient

The committee chose the recipient of the 2024 award, and that recipient was Sandy McElroy.
Sandy was part of our committee and led the entertainment team for the never-to-be-spoken-of-again eight day festival in 2021. Her passion for volunteering is evident and despite no longer being on committee she always assists us with our Bunnings fundraising BBQ’s and is always saying ‘I wish I could do more’.
Outside of Celebrate Mooroolbark Sandy is well known for her contributions to Guiding. Sandy started as a leader in 1992 and has been a leader ever since. She is the Mooroolbark group leader as well as Yarra Ranges co-district Manager (which covers 8 groups in the Yarra ranges). Sandy always makes herself available to support unit nights, and visits groups around the district regularly. She is also a learning partner helping new leaders to complete their leadership training which often takes about 12 months and involves one on one meetings, visiting their units, and being available for support and advice.
Congratulations Sandy! Your community spirit is an inspiration to us all!
