Red Earth Awakened – 40 years on…
From retro rides to futuristic imaginings, Celebrate Mooroolbark 2020 is going to be a party like no other. Opening with Red Earth UnEarthed Friday 20 March at 7pm, the party continues 10am to 4pm Saturday 21 March at Red Earth Park, in the Mooroolbark Community Centre, the Terrace Shopping Centre and throughout the precinct.
It was 1980 when the Mooroolbark Community Centre was opened, with a festival which was to be called the Red Earth Festival. It was a huge success and became the largest festival in Victoria. The last Red Earth Festival took place in 2001 and from small beginnings, Celebrate Mooroolbark took its place in 2002.
Our theme Red Earth Awakened – 40 Years On… is celebrating 40 years of both festivals in Mooroolbark; looking at the history of our festivals, at where we are at today and where we will be in another 40 years. (We know one thing for sure, we won’t have a level crossing and we will have a sky rail!)
So what makes us uniquely Mooroolbark? We love a good festival! So pick your decade and dress to party!
The festival program will be announced soon, but here’s a huge hint. There’s some fantastic inspiration to be found in the Celebrating Mooroolbark publication by Mooroolbark History Group, along with the Living Today in Mooroolbark archives online. Think Retro Rides to Future Fun!
Now, who’s up for a good, old-fashioned mud fight?!!
